MFA Alumnae, Jeanet Dreskin '73 and Adrienne Lichliter '14 MFA Study Abroad Fellowship Interview

    ... ...it is unclear what the premises of the project were (probably very vague, as in the vast majority of art schools these days), but the designation "automatic" doesn't reflect what the students did. If the process would have been "automatic", the resulting images would have been much more differentiated... Half of the participants came out with oversized synapses. Seventy years ago, the same experiment would have produced some kind of brutalist architecture images, in rough strokes...

    Automatic drawing is from the surrealist movement. It’s not a technique.

      Joe Rodriguez you are right the surrealists developed this technique based on Freuds automatic writing and drawing and popularized it. Its still a technique just as pointillism is within Impressionism. I’m sure humans used this before Surrealism just as we might doodle subconsciously on an envelope whilst on the phone, without ever knowing about Surrealism.
